I was sitting in a crowded café reading and enjoying a cup of coffee when a lovely girl asked if she could sit at my table, of course I agreed. She crossed one leg over the other and I saw that her shoe immediately slipped from her heel and dangled from the end of her toes. The shoes were gorgeous dark red ballet flats which seemed to be too big for her. A friend of her must have come in because she suddenly swung round to wave her over. This sudden movement caused her shoe to fall off. With no sign of embarrassment she slipped her foot back into the shoe. The friend arrived and was also wearing ballet flats, patent black this time. The two girls sat facing each other and both let their shoes dangle from their toes. “Sorry, I have knocked your shoe off” said one and that is exactly what she had done and with sufficient force to knock it to my feet. “Could you pass my shoe to me please, I can’t reach it” she said to me. I moved it in her direction with my foot. Two girls with such lovely shoes is something I don’t see that often so I left the café shortly after they did and followed them. Both of them were wearing shoes that seemed to me to be too big, they slipped from their heels with every step. I hoped that the inevitable would happen and it did. One of them walked right out of her shoe as she climbed the steps into the library. “Not again” she muttered as she stepped back into the shoe, “that’s the third time today”. I made my way off determined to keep my eyes open for these two next time I was in town.
